Last month my house was swarming with yellow jackets. I’m terrified of anything that flies and stings so this was not fun at all.
First they were nesting in the eves of the roof. Then they decided to build a second nest under the siding next to a water spigot. They were making their way inside the house 10 or so at a time.
So, I paused one day to ask “What messages are the yellow jackets bringing?”
Yellow jacket energy is fierce and focused. The yellow jackets were showing me the nature of persistence. They told me how sometimes one needs to be on the attack or mindful of an outside attack. They showed me about productivity, community and how they work together as a hive.
The yellow jackets also had a message about how something very tiny can be VERY powerful and create change.
This message resonated. I’ve been working on a project where I face large obstacles and an opponent with money, power, political influence and unlimited resources. So, this was a useful message.
Then, yesterday I was out on a hike. I sat down to rest for a moment and a red squirrel caught my eye. He was jumping from tree branch to tree branch, watching me intently. Once in a while he’d kick his back feet and shake his tail. Then, out of the corner of my eye I saw another. This red squirrel approached me straight on. She came out from behind a tree trunk. She ran at me fast and stopped about 2 feet away from me. THEN she barked.
It was unexpected, loud and shrill. I jumped!
The message? Something tiny can be ferocious and take on big things in a bold way.
So, I will remember the lessons offered by yellow jackets and red squirrels when I feel small or incapable or when the opposition seems overwhelming. Be brave! Be fierce! One person can create change.
